Umrah, known as lesser Haj’ is a spiritual journey for millions of Muslims each year. It has greater importance for Muslims and attracts large crowds from around the world.
Saudi Embassy has put in place strict vaccinations rules for those who travel for Umrah. It is mandatory for them to follow these rules. If you are living in UAE and planning to go for Umrah, you must know these rules to avoid any trouble.
Here is a complete guide to let you know all the vaccination requirements, costs, exemptions, and general health tips you can follow to stay safe while performing Umrah.
Mandatory & Recommended Vaccinations for Umrah Travelers
1. Seasonal Influenza Vaccine – Mandatory for UAE Residents
- All UAE residents are required to take the flu vaccine 10 days before travel time. Khaleej Time

- The flu vaccine cost amounts to Dh50 and Emirates Health Services (EHS) general health centers receive it. Emirates Health Services
- You will get a vaccination card at cost of Dh20 to show at travel hubs.
2. Meningococcal Vaccine (Quadrivalent ACYW-135) – No Longer Mandatory
- Previously, all Umrah travelers aged 1 and above were required to get the meningococcal vaccine at least 10 days before travel. Saudi Embassy
- The certificate was valid for 3 years.
- This vaccine is no longer required for Umrah travelers. Khaleej Times
- However, you can take it for extra protection. But you must book a doctor’s consultation first.
- The consultation fee cost is Dh150. But EHS health card holders have been exempted from this fee. Emirates Health Services
- If you do not have a health card, you can get one for Dh155 via the EHS website, and it will be valid for one year. Emirates Health Services
3. COVID-19 Vaccine – Recommended by Saudi Arabia
- The Saudi Ministry of Health has recommended to take the COVID-19 vaccine before traveling for Umrah.وزارة الصحة السعودية
- However, it is not mandatory.
- Umrah areas include Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, and Taif. Therefore take protection measures due to large gatherings.
How to Get Vaccinated in the UAE
Book an Appointment
- Book an appointment for vaccinations via the Emirates Health Services (EHS) website. Emirates Health Services
- Visit any EHS general health center to get the flu vaccine at least two weeks before your Umrah date so that you could avoid delays.
Cost & Fees
- Flu Vaccine: Dh50 Emirates Health Services
- Vaccination Card: Dh20
- Meningococcal Vaccine Doctor’s Consultation (if needed): Dh150
- EHS Health Card (optional, valid for one year): Dh155
Who is Exempt from the Flu Vaccine Fee?
As UAE residents you can also get the flu vaccine for free. These people include:
- UAE citizens
- People above 50 years old
- Children under 5 years old
- Pregnant women
- People of determination
- University and school students
- Healthcare workers

General Health Tips for a Safe Umrah Journey
1. Keep Your Hands Clean
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
- Use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap is not available.
- It will help you safe from the spread of germs and infections.
2. Cover Your Mouth When Sneezing or Coughing
- Use a tissue when you sneeze or cough.
- Throw used tissues in a wastebasket immediately.
- Sneeze into your elbow, not your hands if you don’t have tissues.
3. Wear a Face Mask in Crowded Places
- Wear Masks to stop the spread of germs in large gatherings.
- Wear a mask during praying, or if you are walking in crowds, or even using public transport.
4. Practice Food Safety
- Do not mix raw and cooked food.
- Cook meat and poultry thoroughly.
- Store food at safe temperatures to avoid contamination.
5. Stay Hydrated & Avoid Sun Exposure
- Drink enough water to stay hydrated.
- Avoid sunlight for too long, especially during Tawaf and Sa’i.
- You should carry an umbrella or wear a hat to protect yourself from the heat.
6. Prevent Mosquito Bites
- Take precautionary measures as mosquitoes can spread diseases.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and light-colored clothes.
- Use mosquito repellent on exposed skin.
7. Carry Essential Medications
- If you suffer from diabetes or hypertension, carry your prescription and enough medicine.
- Keep medicines in their original packaging.
